For the 35-year-old custodian, who will move on a free transfer as his Lokomotiv contract expires after the UEFA Cup Group B tie against Maccabi Petach-Tikva FC on 30 November, the switch represents a return to his roots. Ovchinnikov is a product of the Dinamo academy although he left the club without playing a league game.

Instead he made his name with Lokomotiv where he has spent eleven seasons, from 1991-97 and then from 2002-05. He has amassed 294 league appearances for the Railwaymen, winning two Russian titles as well as a Russian Cup. Ovchinnikov, capped 35 times by his country, has also played for SL Benfica, FC Alverca and FC Porto in Portugal.
