Nations League: League A fixtures, results, how it works

League A hopefuls Netherlands and Germany both scored five as Matchday 1 of the 2024/25 UEFA Nations League drew to a close on Saturday.

Germany's emphatic tally came without reply from Hungary, with Kai Havertz also hitting the crossbar twice in Dusseldorf before finally opening his account from the penalty spot. Julian Nagelsmann's side were already four to the good by then, Niclas Füllkrug, Jamal Musiala, Florian Wirtz and Aleksandar Pavlovic with the goals.

Late strikes from Wout Weghorst and Xavi Simons added gloss for the Dutch against Bosnia and Herzegovina, meanwhile, Ronald Koeman's charges protecting a 3-2 lead until the closing moments. Edin Džeko's 66th international goal had given the visitors hope in Eindhoven.

On Friday, Italy had bounced back from Bradley Barcola's goal after just 13 seconds to record an an eye-catching 3-1 comeback win against France in Paris. Elsewhere, Kevin De Bruyne scored twice as Belgium started up with victory over Israel by the same scoreline.

On Thursday, Cristiano Ronaldo and Robert Lewandowski were both on target as League A kicked off with wins for Portugal, Poland and Denmark, while Serbia held European champions Spain in Belgrade.

How League A of the 2024/25 Nations League works

League A contains 16 teams, drawn into four groups of four. Teams play all their group opponents home and away in September, October and November 2024. Where they finish determines what happens next:

1st and 2nd: Qualify for the two-legged quarter-final stage in March 2025, with the four winners progressing to the Finals in June.

3rd: Face runners-up from League B in home-and-away promotion/relegation play-offs. The aggregate winners will be in League A for 2026/27, with the losers in League B.

4th: Relegated to League B
