UEFA Champions League winners Real Madrid showed their class against UEFA Europa League holders Atalanta to win their sixth UEFA Super Cup.

Real Madrid 2-0 Atalanta: As it happened

Madrid's attack-minded starting XI, featuring Kylian Mbappé for the first time following his summer move from Paris, were kept quiet for much of a first half in which both teams struck the woodwork. Éder Militão diverted Marten De Roon's cross-shot onto the bar as the Italian side nearly grabbed the lead while Rodrygo also rattled the bar with his drive just before the interval.

Mbappé on 'special' Madrid goal

Thibaut Courtois needed to fly to his left and parry Mario Pašalić's excellent header as Atalanta also started the second half impressively but Carlo Ancelotti's men eventually seized control. In the 59th minute, Madrid broke the deadlock as Jude Bellingham's through ball found Vinícius Júnior, whose outside-of-the-boot delivery across the face of goal was on a plate for Valverde to turn in. Then, nine minutes later, Mbappé latched onto to Bellingham's pass and arrowed in his first goal for his new club.

Real Madrid's six Super Cup wins

The result meant Madrid lifted the trophy for a record sixth time, Dani Carvajal and Luka Modrić set a new landmark of five wins for a player, and Ancelotti become the first coach to get his hands on the silverware for a fifth time.
