The prospect of watching Barcelona taking on Sevilla in the UEFA Super Cup brought fans flooding out on to the streets of Tbilisi this week, with all of the tickets allocated to Georgian fans selling out in one mammoth 20-hour session.
With the Georgian Football Federation (GFF) working in conjunction with the national ministry of internal affairs, tickets went on sale to the general public at 9am local time on Sunday, with around 10,000 supporters queueing for a chance of watching the game at the Boris Paichadze Dinamo Arena on 11 August.
With huge public interest, it was decided to keep the ticket kiosks open until the tickets sold out, with the last transactions taking place at 5.15am on Monday.
A GFF spokesman told UEFA.com: "We are happy that the whole process ran in a safe and secure environment and hope that Georgian supporters are happy too."
The traditional curtain-raiser for the new European season, the UEFA Super Cup pits the UEFA Champions League holders against the winners of the UEFA Europa League. From 1998-2012, the game was staged at Monaco's Stade Louis II, but it has been on tour since, with Prague and Cardiff playing host to the last two editions.
After this season's game in Tbilisi – the first major UEFA final to occur in Georgia – the 2016 UEFA Super Cup match will take place in Trondheim, Norway, with the 2017 game scheduled for Skopje.
