Czech cheer on opening day

Czech Republic coach Michal Bílek had plenty to cheer after Day One of the UEFA European Under-19 Championship.

Group A -
Liechtenstein 0-5 Portugal, Norway 0-1 Italy

Carlos Dinis, Portugal
"The first half we did not do so much but in the second period I think we gave Liechtenstein a lot of problems. The important thing was to win the first match and we managed to do it. It was a difficult game particularly in the first half because our players were unable to find space It was good for us in the second half to have some rain - it made it a faster game."

Ralph Loose, Liechtenstein
"We were very well organised in the first half and played a clever tactical game in defence. We showed we had problems in attack because our players lack individual class like the Portuguese players. I thought that we should have more self-confidence in attack and I said this to my players. In the first 15 minutes of the second half they tried it but we had problems in technical things - stopping the ball, dribbling. The last two goals we had only ten players after the red card and when the Portuguese have space it is very dangerous."

Paolo Berrettini, Italy
"It was a very tough match but we played well considering the rain. It was difficult for us because the conditions weren't good and we only finished our national championship a short while ago but I hope we will improve."

Egil Olsen, Norway
"I'm very disappointed. I thought we could win this match but in the first half and at the beginning of the second half, Italy were the better team."

Group B -
England 1-2 Austria, France 3-3 Czech Republic

Michal Bílek, Czech Republic
"We didn't play as well as we wanted but a point for us is a good result. It's not easy playing a team like France who have a phenomenal team and to draw after being 3-1 behind will help us a lot for the rest of the tournament. To win this game we knew we had to fight, we had to work harder than them, be organised and concentrate in defence, but in defence we didn't play as well as I'd wanted."

René Girard, France
"It's disappointing, it's a wasted opportunity. We scored three goals, which is a positive and I think we played 25 minutes of great football in the second half, but we were not solid enough in defence. I think the referee could have helped us too - there were a lot of fouls. The players were not happy about the equaliser, they felt the goalkeeper was impeded but then you still have to react in these situations."

Paul Gludovatz, Austria
"We are not in the semi-finals yet. We need to take it match by match and we are only thinking about our next game against the Czech Republic. We played an excellent second half, with a very strong mentality and on the tactical side it was a very good performance by the whole team. It is great to score with a header against England [through Lukas Mössner] and what is even greater is that they didn't score with a header against us even though English teams are famous for their aerial skills."
