Article body
Israel ended their challenge for a place in the UEFA European Under-19 Championship finals in positive fashion with a 2-0 win against Portugal in Elite round Group 3 in Plasencia.
Unger opener
Both sides had no chance of qualifying for the final phase of the competition in Northern Ireland and Portugal coach António Violante made several changes to the side which had lost against Spain on Matchday 2. Israel got off to the better start and took the lead on eleven minutes when Daniel Unger was left clear to beat goalkeeper Pedro Freitas.
Etey scores
Portugal attempted to redress the balance through Paulo Machado and Miguel Veloso, but the Israeli defence held firm. Virreina saw his effort hit the post on 50 minutes as it looked less and less like being Portugal's day. Menachem Schechter Etey doubled the lead for Israel on 74 minutes following a rapid counter. Israel finished third in the group while Portugal ended in last place having lost all three games in the section.
