Victory in vain for Scotland

Austria 2-3 Scotland Archie Gemmill's side fail to progress from Group 5 despite Steven Naismith's double.

Scotland were knocked out of the UEFA European Under-19 Championship despite rounding off their Elite round Group 5 campaign with a 3-2 win against mini-tournament hosts Austria at the Vöcklamarkt stadium.

Greek success
Archie Gemmill's side knew that victory was essential to keep them in contention but, in the event, Greece's 2-0 win against Slovakia ended the Scots' hopes and earned the Greeks a place in the finals in Northern Ireland. Scotland, therefore, had to settle for second place in the standings.

Quick reply
In Vöcklamarkt, Austria took the lead in the 17th minute as striker Patrick Mayer put the home tem in front, but the lead lasted only two minutes as Steven Naismith brought Scotland level.

Naismith double
Aberdeen FC's Andy Considine gave Gemmill's team the lead early in the second half following a corner, and Naismith chipped in a third minutes later. Scotland held on despite Emin Sulimani pulling a goal back eight minutes from time, but ultimately their evening ended in disappointment.
