After missing out last year, Spain made sure of their place this time with a 4-0 rout of Portugal in their concluding elite round match. The six-time champions eased through Group 1, scoring an elite round high of 13 goals and conceding just once as they saw off Georgia 4-1 and Turkey 5-0 before completing the job against their Iberian neighbours. Borja Mayoral led the way with four goals, while captain Jesús Vallejo and midfielder Marco Asensio were other key members of the side. "The elite round is never easy because there's no margin for error and not a lot of recovery time," said coach Luis de la Fuente. "But these boys have been exceptional and played brilliantly."
