Kane winner
Amy Kane was Everton's hero as her seventh-minute goal proved enough to give Mo Marley's side their first League Cup victory, ending a decade-long wait for a major honour. For Arsenal, eliminated from the UEFA Women's Cup one round later than Everton in the quarter-finals, it was their first loss to English opposition since Charlton Athletic WFC pipped them in this final two years ago.
Smith denied
The upset was on from the moment Kane turned in a cross from Jill Scott after the England midfielder had run on to Natasha Dowie's through ball. Arsenal then pressed hard, in particular Kelly Smith who before half-time had seen one long-range lob tipped over the bar by Danielle Hill, and another headed on to the bar by Everton defender Emily Westwood. However, after the break the Gunners found Everton a stubborn unit to break down, and arguably the best chance fell to Dowie who was denied by goalkeeper Emma Byrne.
'We deserved it'
"I think we deserved it," England midfielder Scott said. "We had a gameplan, we worked hard, and we just believed. I think that was the difference today, we've got a great team spirit. If somebody missed one tackle, someone else was there." However, her side will be hard-pressed to earn another European campaign as they trail leaders Arsenal by 14 points with three games in hand.
