Three for Smith in England romp

Hungary 0-13 England Eight different players scored as England recorded the biggest victory in their history to move clear in Group 5.

Smith hat-trick
The previous best of 10-0, achieved on three occasions, was comfortably surpassed by an England side for whom Kelly Smith scored a hat-trick. Alex Scott, Eniola Aluko and Fara Williams each scored twice, while Rachel Yankey, Katie Chapman, Jody Handley and Jo Potter were also on target.

Mismatch
Ironically, Hungary's only clear opportunity came after Williams had slotted in England's 13th from the penalty spot, although substitute Anita Pádár could only drag the ball wide from a promising position. Home coach András Telek was honest in his assessment of the match. "Imagine a fight between a featherweight and a heavyweight boxer," he said. "Well, this was the same."

Good tempo
Counterpart Hope Powell, who next takes her side to the Netherlands in a fortnight for a huge fixture, said: "Our priority was to guard against any complacency and I'm pleased to say we managed that. We concentrated throughout and did not let our tempo slip, even after half-time when we went in 7-0 up. We wanted to reach the same tally in the second period and we gave it a good go so you've got to be happy. It was a difficult game simply because everybody expected us to win. However the group could be very tight so to get a good number of goals is important.

Room for improvement
"It was a collective effort from the team and it would really be hard to single anyone out. Kelly Smith could have had three in the first four minutes but in the past year we've worked on making sure we can find goals from all areas of the team and today our hard work was there for all to see. We were very good at times but we were also sloppy as well and we must guard against that because against better opposition we would have been punished."
