Germany play out US stalemate

Germany drew 0-0 with the United States on the opening day of the Four Nations Tournament in China, while England lost 2-0 to the 2007 FIFA Women's World Cup hosts.

Below strength
Both the world and European champions and their American opponents were below full strength; Germany without the likes of Birgit Prinz and Steffi Jones, the USA resting strikers Kristine Lilly and Abby Wambach, defender Christie Rampone and midfielder Aly Wagner. And in a tight game there were few chances at either end as each team maintained its long unbeaten run.

England lose
In the opening match, hosts China were soon on top against England, with Zhang Ying striking a fourth-minute goal past visiting goalkeeper Siobhan Chamberlain. Kelly Smith went closest for England from distance, but Han Duan made it two just before the break with a header from a corner. England manager Hope Powell said: "I think at times we were very naïve and conceding a goal very early set us back." China next face Germany on Sunday, when England tackle the USA, who won this trophy for the third time in five seasons last year. The tournament concludes on Tuesday.
