Czech Republic round-up: Kuka hands title to Slovan

Members

FC Slovan Liberec became 1. liga champions for the first time despite losing their final match.

Kuka denies Zizkov
Slovan retained their one-point lead over FK Viktoria Zizkov after the Prague side lost 1-0 at SK Slavia Praha. Pavel Kuka's 84th-minute goal denied Zizkov and made Slovan the first team from outside the capital to lift the title since Czech independence in 1992.

Sparta go second
To salt the wound, Zizkov were then denied a place in the UEFA Champions League qualifying rounds as AC Sparta Praha won to move above them into second place. Instead they will play in the UEFA Cup.

Slovan slip up
Slovan conceded early goals to Martin Kolár and Radek Šírl at Bohemians before Václav Koloušek reduced the deficit. With the championship seemingly slipping away from them, the visitors laid siege to the home area but passed up the chance of an equaliser when Jirí Štajner missed a penalty.

Jun joy for Sparta
However, Zizkov's hopes of overhauling them ended with Kuka's late strike at the Strahov stadium. Sparta, meanwhile, had 19-year-old forward Tomáš Jun to thank for their 1-0 victory at 1. FC Synot. It was the youngster's fifth goal in seven games since his arrival from FK Jablonec 97.

Drnovice go down
Elsewhere, FK Chmel Blšany preserved their top-flight status with a 1-1 draw at SK Hradec Králové. František Koubek scored the goal that left them three points above FK Drnovice in the final reckoning. Second-bottom Drnovice lost at home to Jablonec - Josef Laštovka and Miroslav Vodehnal condemning them to a 2-0 defeat - and were relegated after nine years in the first division.

Opava's fond farewell
SFC Opava finished bottom but signed off with a 2-1 success at FC Brno. Finally, FK Teplice made it six straight wins thanks to Radek Divecký's late strike against FC Príbram.
