Sliema Wanderers FC are the new leaders of the Maltese Premier League. Their 2-0 win against former leaders Hibernians FC on Saturday put them two points clear of their rivals.

Doncic double
A double from Yugoslav top marksman Danilo Doncic were enough to see Sliema cruise to an important if not decisive win.  Valletta win again.

Valletta revival
Elsewhere, Valletta FC's revival continues apace. Their 2-1 win over traditional neighbouring rivals Floriana put them in fourth place on 20 points, and clearly in a position to offer a serious challenge for the title.

Zammit penalty
A 32nd-minute penalty kick from Ivan Zammit put the Valletta ahead. Nigerian Chris Oretan doubled the score three minutes later. The strong Valletta striker bustled his way inside the area after receiving a perfect assist from Pavel Mraz, to hit low past Floriana goalkeeper Matthew Camilleri. Camilleri distinguished himself with a series of saves from tries by Kamil Dvorak and Pavel Mraz in the second half.

Consolation goal
Thirteen minutes from time, Brazilian Edoardo do Nascimento reduced the gap for Floriana with a well-executed goal. His low shot beat Valletta goalkeeper all ends up after receiving from George Mallia.
