Hibernians FC won the Maltese Premier League title after beating Floriana FC 2-0.

Hibernians FC won their ninth Maltese Premier League title today, seven years after their last title success.

Mifsud double
Before a bumper crowd at the National stadium, Robert Gatt's side registered a 2-0 win over Floriana FC thanks to two first-half goals from Adrian Mifsud. The lanky striker escaped the attention of the Floriana defence on 12 minutes and beat Matthew Camilleri with a powerful diagonal shot from the right. Mifsud beat Camilleri again to double the Paolites' lead on the half hour - his 27th strike of the season.

Great joy
Hibernians - who have found the perfect way to mark their 80th anniversary - continued to dominate into the second half and the final whistle brought scenes of jubilation among the their supporters, who celebrated amid a sea of black-and-white flags and scarves. For Floriana, however, their chances of a place in Europe next season have now been dashed.

Naxxar relegated
In the day's relegation pool game, Marsa FC beat Naxxar Lions FC 2-1 to condemn them to first division football next season. Naxxar went ahead on 38 minutes when Daniel Bogdanovic's nicely floated cross from the right was headed home by Edmund Lufi. Marsa got back on level terms just before the end of the first half with a low shot from Donovan Friggieri, but Nigerian Minabo Aschemie restored Marsa's lead on 55 minutes.
