Malta round-up: Valletta sign off with win

Valletta FC can still dream of third place in the Premier League after beating Sliema Wanderers FC.

Tied for third
First-half goals from Nicky Saliba and Chris Oretan lifted Valletta level on 30 points with third-placed Birkirkara FC, who face champions Hibernians FC in the season finale tomorrow. If Birkirkara lose, a play-off will decide the position.

Oretan scores again
Saliba opened the scoring on 24 minutes when his right-wing cross was touched in by Sliema goalkeeper Murphy Akanji. But Akanji could do nothing about Oretan's 16th goal of the campaign four minutes later.

Naxxar bow out
In the relegation pool, relegated Naxxar Lions FC bowed out with a 2-1 victory against Pieta' Hotspurs FC. Naxxar won the points with two goals in three second-half minutes from Edmund Lufi and Simon Muscat. By way of a reply, Pieta' could muster only a late strike by Malcolm Licari. Both games took place at the National stadium in Ta' Qali.
