Malta round-up: Derby joy for Floriana

Floriana FC celebrated a 1-0 win in the derby game against Valletta FC today.

Eduardo Do Nascimento scored the only goal of the game after 23 minutes. He burst through the Valletta defence to beat the goalkeeper after Massimo Schembri had already gone close for Floriana. Valletta failed to rise to the occasion after going a goal down although they did manage to hit the post from a corner kick after half an hour.

Mixed fortunes for Galea
In today's other championship pool match, Hamrun Spartans FC won their first game in the final stage against one-time title hopefuls Birkirkara FC. David Galea scored the only goal of the game after 16 minutes as he finished from a Kevin Borg cross. With Birkirkara severely weakened by injuries and suspensions, Hamrun should have added to their tally and Galea blotted his copybook by missing a penalty.
