Article body
Ray Farrugia has succeeded Patrick Curmi as coach of Maltese Premier League side Pietà Hotspurs FC.
Fine achievement
In his short spell with Pietà, Curmi managed to transform the team from a mediocre side into one that not only secured their top-flight status, but also topped the second phase "relegation pool" section.
U-21 coach
The 46-year-old Farrugia is a popular figure with the locals and his success with Malta's Under-21 side made him a favourite to take over the national team.
Offer declined
But with German Sigi Held taking that role, the ambitious Farrugia, who in his playing days represented Floriana FC, Parramatta Melita Eagles and Naxxar Lions FC, decided not to accept the Malta Football Association's (MFA) offer of a two-year contract extension.
