Manchester United FC have appointed Carlos Queiroz as assistant manager.

Manchester United FC have appointed former Portugal coach Carlos Queiroz as their new assistant manager to Sir Alex Ferguson.

World Cup success
The Mozambique-born Queiroz was in charge of South Africa until March this year, after guiding them to the FIFA World Cup finals. He resigned following a dispute with technical director Jomo Sono. He will be United's first foreign coach.

'Absolutely delighted'
"We're absolutely delighted," United chief executive Peter Kenyon told the club's official TV station. "Carlos' experience will add a great deal to what is already a good coaching staff that's helped us collect many trophies over the last few years."

No trophy
United failed to win a trophy in 2001/02, although they reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League and finished third in the English FA Premiership. They have been without a high-profile assistant since Steve McClaren left in summer 2001 to take charge of Middlesbrough FC.
