Southampton FC's Latvian international striker Marian Pahars could miss the start of the English FA Premiership season after undergoing an operation to cure a groin injury.
Groin injury
Pahars picked up the injury while training in Latvia and his recuperation from the surgery will keep him out of action for up to five weeks and with the new English season getting under way in five weeks, it is touch and go whether he will be fit in time for the club's opening day fixture against Middlesbrough FC on 17 August.
'Opportunity for others'
"It is disappointing but it is just one of those things. There was no way we could have known this was going to happen otherwise he would have had the operation at the end of the season", said chairman Rupert Lowe. "He may or may not recover in time for the first league match, but if not then it will be an opportunity for others."
