Tottenham Hotspur FC will sign Japanese international midfield player Kazuyuki Toda on a one-year loan, subject to his passing a medical over the weekend, the English Premiership side announced today.
Terms agreed
The 25-year-old Toda, who plays for Shimizu S-Pulse in the J-League, has agreed terms with Tottenham and will become the second Japanese player to feature in the English top flight. Fulham FC's Junichi Inamoto was the first Japanese footballer to arrive in England on a full-time basis when he joined Arsenal FC last season.
Work permit granted
Toda, who has been granted a work permit, featured in every game for Japan during last summer's FIFA World Cup when he sported a distinctive red mohican hairstyle. He had been on trial at another Premiership club, Sunderland AFC, before Tottenham moved for him.
'Impressive midfielder'
Tottenham manager Glenn Hoddle said: "Toda is an immensely impressive midfielder and we are delighted to welcome him to the club. His addition to the squad will give us more options in this area, and I am sure the fans will quickly see the benefit of his strengths."
