Outcast in Ostrava
The 28-year-old will fight for the No1 jersey with Košice's other Czech goalkeeper, the former FK Viktoria Zizkov player Jirí Kobr, rather than endure more reserve-team football in Ostrava. Baránek spent the autumn season playing for Baník's second team in the Czech third division.
Czech mates
Baránek becomes Košice's fourth Czech signing, linking up with former CU Bohemians Praha midfielder Pavel Kulig and the ex-FC Zlín forward Tomás Janda as well as keeper Kobr. League rules stipulate that only three of them can appear in any given game. Košice, who are second from bottom of the First League table, have also drafted in MŠK Ruzomberok's Slovakian midfielder Marek Fabula as they seek to avoid relegation in the spring.
