Home defeat
Following Sunday's home defeat by FC Dinamo Bucuresti, Cartu decided to step down with his side in eleventh place, just two points above bottom club FC Petrolul Ploiesti.
Title landmark
Cartu is the last coach to have won the title with Universitatea - in 1991 - and his latest spell at the club began in October 2002. He led the team to seventh place last season.
Temporary appointment
Cartu's place will be taken on a temporary basis by his assistant Gheorghe Ciurea, who will oversee Wednesday's cup game against Petrolul.
