Greek setting for coaches' course

Coaching Coach

The 14th UEFA Course for Coach Educators will take place in Crete at the end of this month.

Keynote speech
The 14th UEFA Course for Coach Educators will focus on club cultures, coaching schools, styles of play and different approaches to the game as European football prepares for UEFA EURO 2004™ this summer. At the course, which runs from 29 March-2 April, Andy Roxburgh, UEFA's technical director, will give the keynote speech about football philosophies, entitled The Coach's Compass.

EURO 2004™ coaches
Otto Rehhagel of Greece and Switzerland's Jakob Kuhn, coaches who have guided their teams to EURO 2004™, will be present at the course, which falls in the same week as the international friendly match between the two countries on 31 March.

Schools of thought
Rehhagel will speak about his approach in preparing his team for Portugal, while Kuhn will be among several experts discussing the schools of thought in their own countries. The experts include experienced German coach Holger Osieck, Italian Football Federation coaching instructor Franco Ferrari and English Football Association technical co-ordinator Robin Russell.

Technical training
Club matters will also play a key role on the agenda, with René Meulensteen, skills development coach at Manchester United FC, leading a practical session on technical training at the English club.

Discussion groups
Dr Jozef Venglos, chairman of the UEFA technical development committee, will be among other guests to look at coaching and technical developments on the world stage, and the delegates will be asked in discussion groups to give feedback to UEFA on related technical educational issues.

The Greek way
Greek sport faces a busy year, with its footballers' participation in EURO 2004™ followed by the Olympic Games in Athens. The course will feature the Greek approach to football that has helped the national team achieve its recent successes. Hellenic Football Federation coach education director Aristotelis Batakis will explain the Greek way, assisted by the heads of the Olympiacos CFP and FC Hercules Thessaloniki academies, Sakis Dokas and Thomas Sentelidis.
