Brooking receives knighthood

One club man
Brooking, 55, spent his entire 17-year playing career at West Ham United FC, and scored 88 goals in 521 games for the Londoners before retiring in 1984. He also made 47 appearances for England and scored five goals, but his one FIFA World Cup, in Spain in 1982, was curtailed by injury.

'A great honour'
"It's a special moment and a great honour," Brooking said in a statement released by the English Football Association (FA). "It's nice for the family and I think it's good for sport in general." Since his playing days ended, Brooking has pursued a dual career as a television pundit and sports administrator. He is now director of football development at the FA.
