Murphy and Jeffers join Charlton

Members

Charlton Athletic FC have signed Danny Murphy and Francis Jeffers in deals totalling over €7.5m.

Out of favour
Murphy, 27, had been linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur FC but moved to Charlton instead, having been told he was not part of new Liverpool manager Rafael Benítez's first-team plans. Liverpool are expected to replace Murphy with the Real Sociedad de Fútbol midfield player Xabi Alonso.

Eye for goal
Murphy, a midfield player with an eye for goal, made 19 Premiership starts for Liverpool last season and joins Charlton after seven years at Anfield. The former Crewe Alexandra FC player was an integral part of Liverpool's 2001 UEFA Cup and FA Cup-winning sides, but injury kept him out of the League Cup final that campaign.

Jeffers deal
Meanwhile, Jeffers arrives on a two-year contract from Arsenal FC, where he had struggled to win a first-team place after a high-profile €14m transfer from Everton FC in 2001. The 23-year-old striker returned to Everton on loan last August but scored only two goals and returned to Arsenal at the end of the season.
