Ailton tops German poll

Ailton has become the first foreign footballer to win the Player of the Year award in Germany.

Bremen double
The 31-year-old scored 28 league goals last season to help SV Werder Bremen win the Bundesliga and German Cup, before moving to FC Schalke 04 in the summer.

Lahm second
He topped the Kicker poll with 216 votes from a possible 712. In second place was defender Philipp Lahm of VfB Stuttgart (172 votes) with FC Bayern München midfielder Michael Ballack third (63 votes).

Schaaf honour
For the fourth consecutive year, Birgit Prinz of 1. FFC Frankfurt was voted Female Player of the Year while Bremen's Thomas Schaaf took the coach's prize.
