Top-flight trio exit German Cup

Members

1. FSV Mainz 05 and 1. FC Nürnberg lost to second-flight sides and SC Freiburg beat VfL Bochum 1848.

1. FSV Mainz 05 and 1. FC Nürnberg both saw their German Cup campaigns ended by 2. Bundesliga outfits tonight.

Mainz misery
Mainz have been impressing in their first season in the top division, but the fifth-placed side were defeated in their second-round tie against Karlsruher SC. Mimoun Azaouagh put visitors Mainz ahead early in the second half and Sean Dundee levelled eight minutes from time. After extra time yielded no goals, Karlsruher prevailed 3-0 in a one-sided penalty shoot-out.

Ahlen delight
Nürnberg were cruising at home to LR Ahlen as Marek Mintal and Robert Vittak gave them a 2-0 half-time lead, but goals from Musemestre Bamba and Tim Gorschlüter forced extra time. Although Ahlen's Gledson was dismissed early in the second period, Bamba struck the winner two minutes from time.

Freiburg through
VfL Bochum 1848 were also defeated in extra time by top-flight rivals SC Freiburg. After Tommy Bechmann's 23rd-minute goal for Bochum was cancelled out by Sascha Riether before the break, the visitors led again nine minutes into the second half through Zvjezdan Misimovic, only for Regis Dorn to level in added time and strike the winner in the 115th minute.

Makaay bolsters Bayern
Bayern had Roy Makaay to thank for a dramatic 3-2 victory at third-flight outfit VfL Osnabrück, who led with 16 minutes to go before Claudio Pizarro equalised and Makaay's last-gasp effort sent Bayern though.

Further fixtures
The other top-flight side in action, DSC Arminia Bielefeld, were the only ones to prevail in 90 minutes, winning 4-2 against 1. FC Köln's amateur side. The rest of the third round lineup will be decided tomorrow.
