Nigerian forward Julius Aghahowa has joined Wigan Athletic FC from Ukrainian champions FC Shakhtar Donetsk after being granted a work permit by the British government.

Successful appeal
An appeals committee gave the 24-year-old permission to play in England to the delight of Wigan manager Paul Jewell. "I'm absolutely delighted," he said. "We were confident the appeal would go in our favour because Julius is a proven quality striker." No fee or contract details have been revealed.

English dreams
"I have dreamt of playing in England but until now, the chance hasn't come," added Aghahowa, who arrived at Shakhtar from Espérance Sportive de Tunis in 2001 and scored 32 goals in 89 league games for the Ukrainian title-holders. "This is the most famous league in the world and I want to come and show the manager of Wigan and the fans what I can do," continued Aghahowa. His 30 appearances for Nigeria have yielded 14 goals.
