Bayern complete Ribéry coup

French international winger Franck Ribéry has become FC Bayern München's latest high-profile recruit after agreeing to transfer from Olympique de Marseille.

Double signing
It is a major coup for the German side who have signed the sought-after Ribéry on a four-year deal for a reported €25m despite failing to qualify for the UEFA Champions League next season. Bayern, who were looking to strengthen their squad after selling England midfielder Owen Hargreaves to Manchester United FC, have also completed the €11m transfer of Italy striker Luca Toni from ACF Fiorentina and Germany defender Marcell Jansen from VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach. "After a difficult year for Bayern, we are pleased to have signed two world-class players in Ribéry and Toni," said Bayern sporting director Uli Hoeness. "We are very proud of our transfers. We have really invested a lot of money."

Disappointing season
While the Bavarian side prepare for the UEFA Cup, Marseille will be looking ahead to a return to the UEFA Champions League after finishing runners-up in Ligue 1. Losing the 24-year-old, though, has come as a blow. "We have helped Franck to get where he is today and we are not really happy to let him go," said club chairman Pape Diouf. Ribéry joined Marseille from Galatasaray SK two years ago and scored eleven goals in 60 league appearances for the French side, winning the 2005 UEFA Intertoto Cup and appearing in two French Cup finals. The skilful midfielder has also been capped 18 times for his country, the last of those caps coming on Wednesday night as France won 1-0 against Georgia in UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifying.
