The new Bundesliga campaign began in thrilling fashion on Friday night as the champions VfB Stuttgart drew 2-2 with last season’s runners-up FC Schalke 04 at the Gottlieb-Daimler-Stadion.

Hilbert save
Schalke, pipped to the crown by two points last term, struck first in front of 57,500 fans in Stuttgart as Levan Kobiashvili's shot found its way into the net via home goalkeeper Roberto Hilbert. Stuttgart struggled to break down the resolute Schalke defence for the rest of the half, but turned the match around with two goals in four minutes shortly after Hilbert had prevented Kevin Kuranyi doubling the lead against his former club.

Debut goal
Sami Khedira levelled proceedings in the 63rd minute, and Mexican Pavel Pardo completed the turnaround (67) by stroking in his second league goal for the club from the penalty spot. Schalke responded by replacing Kobiashvili with Ivan Rakitić in the 70th minute and the midfielder took just six minutes to mark his debut with a goal and earn Schalke an away point. Saturday sees nine further opening fixtures, including FC Bayern München versus FC Hansa Rostock.
