USA memories
Hanging up his boots at the age of 38, Borimirov was the last player still active from the famous Bulgaria side that reached the FIFA World Cup semi-finals in the United States 14 years ago. He is also the only Bulgarian to have played in two UEFA European Championships, having featured at both EURO '96™ and UEFA EURO 2004™. In total he struck eleven goals in 70 games for the national team.
Levski honours
Borimirov started out at local club FC Bdin Vidin in 1987, before joining Levski Sofia three years later. In 1995, he was transferred to German outfit TSV 1860 München and, after ten seasons in the Bundesliga, returned to Levski in January 2004. His time with the capital club yielded five Bulgarian titles and just as many Bulgarian Cups.
'Worthy successor'
As sporting director, Borimirov succeeds Nasko Sirakov, who was dismissed two weeks ago. "I believe I will be a worthy replacement," he said. "I'm proud to be offered this challenge and I'm looking forward to working for the good of the club." Levski also confirmed that keeper Georgi Petkov has signed a new deal lasting until 2012, while defender Igor Tomašić will leave as a free agent. Levski finished second in the Bulgarian championship and will compete in the UEFA Cup next term.
