Victorious FC Bayern München coach Louis van Gaal plans to "party tonight" after wrapping up the Bundesliga title, before switching his focus to parts two and three of a potential treble.
Bayern made sure of their 22nd league championship with a comfortable 3-1 victory over relegated Hertha BSC Berlin at the Olympiastadion, in-form Arjen Robben scoring twice in the last 16 minutes after Adrián Ramos equalised for the hosts. Van Gaal's side return to the capital next Saturday to play Werder Bremen in the German Cup final prior to a UEFA Champions League showpiece meeting with FC Internazionale Milano in Madrid seven days later.
Having all but assured themselves of top spot with last week's 3-1 defeat of VfL Bochum 1848, Bayern went into the match under no real pressure to perform. Nevertheless, Van Gaal selected a strong squad and was rewarded with a healthy five-point finishing margin over second-placed FC Schalke 04, who ended their campiagn with a 0-0 draw at 1. FSV Mainz 05.
"It's wonderful for the fans," enthused Van Gaal, who sensibly swapped his suit for a rain jacket at half-time in preparation for the post-match shower of beer from his jubilant squad. "We played the most attractive football of any team in the Bundesliga this season and that's very important to me."
Having won a league title for the second consecutive campaign after last year's Eredivisie triumph with AZ Alkmaar, Van Gaal insisted the celebrations would be short-lived as he aims to complete a treble never before completed by Bayern . "I'll enjoy the party tonight," said Van Gaal, who has now won league titles at all four clubs he has coached after previous successes with AZ Alkmaar, FC Barcelona and AFC Ajax. "I'm pleased we won today because it keeps our rhythm going."
