Montpellier Hérault SC are the early leaders in France after recording their third consecutive success with a 4-0 defeat of Stade Rennais FC, their joy contrasting with frustration for Olympique de Marseille following a goalless home stalemate against AS Saint-Étienne.
Fresh from seeing off champions LOSC Lille Métropole last weekend, Montpellier suggested that result was no fluke by making light work of UEFA Europa League play-off contenders Rennes. Younés Belhanda opened the scoring from the spot (31) following a Benoît Costil foul on Garry Bocaly, and, after Geoffrey Dernis had added a second (52), Suleyman Camara struck twice in the final 18 minutes.
Marseille are still waiting for their first win of the Ligue 1 season, meanwhile, after they could find no way past St-Étienne despite an 85th-minute red card for the visitors' Jean-Pascal Mignot. Their great rivals Paris Saint-Germain FC performed better as they grabbed their first success by dispatching Valenciennes FC 2-1 at home – Nenê notching the winner via a penalty – while FC Sochaux-Montbéliard made light of Carlão's dismissal after 65 minutes to prevail 2-1 at AS Nancy-Lorraine.
