FC Schalke 04 climbed to fourth in the Bundesliga with a 3-1 home victory against bottom-club FC Augsburg, while in the day's other game Hamburger SV ran out 2-0 winners against 1. FC Nürnberg.
Klaas-Jan Huntelaar fired Schalke ahead on 16 minutes but Huub Stevens's side were pegged back when Sascha Mölders equalised (48). The hosts were not to be denied, though, with goals from Christian Fuchs (66) and Raúl González lifting them to within three points of leaders FC Bayern München.
Goals in either half from José Paolo Guerrero (23) and Marcell Jansen (62) stretched Hamburg's unbeaten league run to seven and condemned Nürnberg to a fourth defeat in five Bundesliga outings. As a result, Hamburg moved above their opponents into 11th, while Nürnberg are 15th.
