Montpellier Hérault SC missed the chance to open up a three-point lead at the Ligue 1 summit after being held by Toulouse FC, but it was a better day for AS Saint-Étienne, who climbed to fifth with victory at Dijon FCO.

Geoffrey Dernis (7) had seemingly set the league leaders on their way to a home win but Cheikh Mbengué's strike five minutes before the break earned Toulouse a share of the spoils. Montpellier will surrender top spot on Sunday if second-placed Paris Saint-Germain FC defeat LOSC Lille Métropole, who are fourth. Olympique Lyonnais occupy third after a 2-1 victory against Évian Thonon Gaillard FC.

Elsewhere, St-Étienne ran out 2-1 winners at Dijon and are now up to fifth, seven points off the summit. Olympique de Marseille required two goals in the final six minutes, including Benoît Cheyrou's third of the season deep into added time, to defeat nine-man FC Lorient.

Just three points separates Stade Brestois 29 − 1-0 winners at home to AJ Auxerre − in tenth and OGC Nice, who lie 18th after beating fellow strugglers Valenciennes FC. In the day's other game AS Nancy-Lorraine recorded their second away win of the season at SM Caen.
