United denied at the death, Chelsea beat Arsenal

Clint Dempsey struck in added time to secure Tottenham Hotspur FC a 1-1 draw with leaders Manchester United FC, after Chelsea FC overcame Arsenal FC 2-1.

Sir Alex Ferguson's side had not lost at White Hart Lane since 2001 and that record looked likely to remain intact when Robin van Persie connected with Tom Cleverley's centre and planted a firm header beyond Hugo Lloris (25). Tottenham's response was spirited as Gareth Bale and Dempsey both forced David de Gea to make fine reflex saves.

A second-half onslaught ensued and just as it seemed the visitors had weathered the storm, Dempsey popped up deep into added time to steer in Aaron Lennon's cutback. The result leaves United five points clear of closest pursuers Manchester City FC.

In the early kick-off, Chelsea triumphed for only the second time in six Premier League home games under Rafael Benítez. The relief was tangible when Juan Mata stroked in after six minutes, before Frank Lampard scored from the spot after Ramires had been tripped by goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny.

The balance of play shifted after the restart and the rejuvenated visitors made their pressure count when Theo Walcott executed a precise finish. That was as good as it got for Arsenal, however, with Chelsea defending meticulously to keep their opponents at bay.
