Manchester City FC made heavy weather of their home match against promoted Hull City AFC before prevailing 2-0.

Manuel Pellegrini's side raised a few eyebrows by succumbing 3-2 at Cardiff City FC in their second fixture, and for a time it seemed their frustration would be repeated against Hull. But, as in the Welsh capital, substitute Álvaro Negredo (65) scored with a header, burying Pablo Zabaleta's deep cross to break the deadlock. The game, though, was only put beyond the reach of a determined Hull side in the final minute when Yaya Touré curled a free-kick in off the underside of the bar.

Goals were few and far between elsewhere, and Hatem Ben Arfa's terrific late winner was a stand-out. The angled left-footed drive, four minutes from time, earned a first win for Newcastle United FC at home against Fulham FC.

Nathan Redmond's fine strike helped Norwich City FC beat Southampton FC 1-0 at home, while Crystal Palace FC stunned Sunderland AFC; Stuart O'Keefe's superb curler sealing a 3-1 against Paolo Di Canio's side, who had John O'Shea sent off.

Jermaine Pennant's late free-kick earned Stoke City FC all three points at West Ham United FC, while Cardiff City and Everton FC finished goalless.
