Tony Fitzgerald, the newly-elected president of the Football Association of Ireland (FAI), says he is "honoured" to have been given the task of heading up the association.
The 71-year-old took over as FAI president at the association's annual general meeting. Predecessor Paddy McCaul stepped down after four years of outstanding service and, for Fitzgerald, the volunteer side of the FAI is a key element.
"I am honoured to have been elected president of the FAI," he said. "It is a very proud moment for me, and I look forward to serving the needs of our volunteers nationwide. Hopefully I will be able to live up to the task of this position."
"Tony is a great football man," added FAI chief executive John Delaney. "He has been involved in the game all of his life in Cork, and will be an excellent representative as the incoming FAI president for all of the volunteers throughout the country."
"The new FAI vice-president Donal Conway is highly respected within Irish football, with lifelong involvement in schools football. We wish them both all the very best in their new roles."
