Subašić busy but still unbeatable for Monaco

Danijel Subašić said had to do "more work than usual" against Olympique Lyonnais, but it ended well for AS Monaco FC, who have not conceded in eight games.

A 0-0 draw at home to Ligue 1 leaders Olympique Lyonnais has maintained confidence at AS Monaco FC, who have now not conceded in eight matches in all competitions – nor, indeed, in their last eight Ligue 1 fixtures.

Even without the division's top scorer Alexandre Lacazette, Lyon made a powerful start in the principality, but Hubert Fournier's men could not find their way past Monaco's Croatia goalkeeper Danijel Subašić – who has not been beaten in 791 minutes in the league. "This run is great for me," said the 30-year-old 'Suba'. "Confidence is growing for the whole team, even though I had more work than usual."

Signed from HNK Hajduk Split in 2012, the No1 has a way to go to equal Gaëtan Huard's record of 1,176 minutes without shipping a goal in Ligue 1, achieved with FC Girondins de Bordeaux from 1992 to 1993. Even so, Subašić and his side are feeling positive. "We'll endeavour to stay rock-solid as we have been for the last three months," said midfielder and captain Jérémy Toulalan, mindful that the only time Monaco have been breached in 12 games was in extra time at Lyon in the League Cup on 17 December.

Fifth-placed Monaco might have come out of Sunday's encounter with more than a point, Dimitar Berbatov crashing a header against the post, yet coach Leonardo Jardim was eager to look at the bigger picture afterwards. He called their eight-match undefeated streak in the top flight "reward for the whole team's efforts" – and former Monaco boss Arsène Wenger will know that his old side will not capitulate easily when they take on Arsenal FC in the UEFA Champions League round of 16.

Jardim – who replaced Claudio Ranieri last summer – had been criticised for a perceived lack of personality in his team, who got through the UEFA Champions League group stage having scored just four goals while conceding only one. Their character will be tested in the upcoming weeks, with Wednesday's League Cup semi-final versus SC Bastia to be followed, among other assignments, by a French Cup round of 16 tie against Stade Rennais FC, a derby at OGC Nice and – after the 25 February first leg at Arsenal – a visit from champions Paris Saint-Germain.

Extending their sequence of clean sheets through February would be something astounding, but Subašić is up for the challenge: "791 minutes now," he tweeted after the Lyon draw. "We'll continue to keep it tight."
