Feyenoord have announced that former Netherlands and FC Barcelona defender Giovanni van Bronckhorst will succeed out-going Fred Rutten as their coach at the end of the season.
Van Bronckhorst has agreed a two-year contract. "That I will now be head coach at the club where I started as a junior and to which I returned after a long career fills me with pride," said Van Bronkhorst.
Now 40, he has been coaching at the Rotterdam outfit since retiring after the 2010 FIFA World Cup final, first as a youth coach and then as first-team assistant. "I have learned a lot from both Ronald Koeman and Fred Rutten as assistant coach. A fantastic challenge awaits me."
Van Bronckhorst finished his club career where it began, at Feyenoord. The left-back gained league and cup honours with Rangers FC and Arsenal FC before switching to Barcelona, initially on loan, in 2003.
His finest hour came when helping Barcelona, coached by Frank Rijkaard, to victory over the Gunners in the 2006 UEFA Champions League final. He earned 106 international caps for the Oranje.
