Moldova round-up: Zimbru suffer first defeat

FC Sheriff Tiraspol consolidated their lead as they beat second-placed FC Zimbru Chisinau 3-2.

FC Sheriff Tiraspol consolidated their lead in the Moldovan first division as they beat second-placed FC Zimbru Chisinau 3-2 on Sunday.

Late own goal
Zimbru, beaten for the first time this season, have now not won against their principal rivals for two years, although Eugen Bastina did give them a first-half lead. However, Andriy Nesteruk and Christian Tudor both scored after the break to put Sheriff ahead. Ghenady Pusca then equalised before an Ionel Cires own goal with three minutes left secured the game for the leaders, whose advantage is extended to four points.

Praise from coach
Sheriff coach Gabi Balint said of the result: "I would have been happy with a draw, but my team exceeded my expectations with their will to win." His opposite number, Gabi Stan, added: "Sheriff are better organised at the moment, while we have had only a few months together and it told in this game."

Strugglers win
FC Tiraspol suffered a surprise 2-1 defeat against lowly FC Politechnica Chisinau, Dinu Caras and Dumitru Gusila scoring for the victors. Elsewhere, FC Nistru Otaci were held 1-1 by FC Agro Chisinau, while FC Dacia Chisinau overcame FC Hîncesti 5-1 in Monday's game to move into third.
