Second-tier sides Millwall FC and Blackburn Rovers FC kicked off the day with a 0-0 stalemate in their last-eight tie, but the possibility of a repeat result was swiftly ruled out at Old Trafford when Javier Hernández headed United ahead five minutes in.
Wayne Rooney's free-kick doubled the advantage shortly after as it appeared that Sir Alex Ferguson's side were all set to put their UEFA Champions League exit swiftly behind them.
