Hamburger SV have relieved coach Bert van Marwijk and his assistant Roel Coumans of their duties in the wake of Saturday's 4-2 loss at bottom club TSV Eintracht Braunschweig.

The result was Hamburg's seventh consecutive league reverse, leaving them 17th in the Bundesliga and two points adrift of safety. "We felt obliged to make this decision, although it wasn't an easy one," explained HSV sporting director Oliver Kreuzer. "We want to thank Bert van Marwijk for the work he has done here."

The 61-year-old former Netherlands boss, who only signed a two-year deal to succeed Thorsten Fink last September, coached Borussia Dortmund from 2004 to 2006. His other club postings include spells with Feyenoord and Fortuna Sittard.
