The €3.5m extension completes the latest phase in the development where the FAW has been permanently based since 2020. The initial construction was assisted by funding from the UEFA HatTrick programme, while the latest upgrade has been made possible through the support of the Welsh government, taking 18 months to complete.
The project includes the expansion of the gym and activation rooms that are used by all of the Wales national teams, together with additional analysis and sports science areas. Additional changing areas for staff are also part of the extension along with a new lecture theatre for team meetings and a multi-purpose room that will host press conferences and media interviews.
This multi-purpose room includes state-of-the-art audio and video facilities and will also be available to cater for in-house media requirements. This room has been named the ‘Wynnstay 1876’ in recognition of the fact that the FAW was formed at the Wynnstay Hotel in Ruabon near Wrexham almost 150 years ago. Extra office space and meeting rooms for staff complete the project and ensure that the association will benefit at all levels.
"We’re very excited to open the new wing at the Hensol headquarters, further investing into the Cymru national teams and the wider association. It’s vitally important that our national teams and staff have the best possible facilities to enable us to reach our full potential, both nationally and on the world stage."
The FAW has also ensured that environmental and sustainability factors were taken into account in completing the project, with solar panels powering this new area of their HQ, while power usage will be carefully monitored through an internal building management system. A garden area has been included to help local wildlife and recycled materials have been used as part of the office extension.
