Immediate success
The 53-year-old Chilean arrived at Villarreal for his first European adventure in the summer of 2004 after leaving CA River Plate, and immediately won the UEFA Intertoto Cup and reached the UEFA Cup quarter-finals with his new team, while steering them to a club-record third place in the Primera División.
Winning run
Last season they made the UEFA Champions League semi-finals on their tournament debut, losing narrowly to Arsenal FC, but this term they went out of the UEFA Intertoto Cup against Slovenia's NK Maribor and began poorly in the league. However, Sunday's 1-0 victory at Athletic Club Bilbao, their fourth consecutive win, lifted Villarreal up to eleventh in the table.
