Brugge take slim advantage

Belgian title-holders Club Brugge KV secured a first-leg victory against Germany's BV Borussia Dortmund, but a second-half away goal from Marcio Amoroso gave the visitors hope of progress from their UEFA Champions League third qualifying round tie.

Stoica on form
Dortmund created the first chance of the match through Tomáš Rosický, but the decision of Brugge coach Trond Sollied to replace injured midfield player Gaëtan Englebert with Alin Stoica soon paid dividends as the Romanian began to cause the visitors problems.

Ceh on target
In the first 20 minutes, Brugge went close several times through Stoica, while Dortmund reacted with a Rosický free-kick well saved by Dany Verlinden, who turned 40 last week. It was Brugge who found a way through on 32 minutes when Peter Van der Heyden's cross was headed in by Nastja Ceh.

Lead doubled
A minute before half-time, Gert Verheyen turned in an Andrés Mendoza ball to double the lead, but following the break it was clear Brugge intended to defend that advantage as they pulled back their midfield. However, with Dortmund's Ghanaian forward Otto Addo on for defender André Bergdølmo, the visitors poured forward and eight minutes into the half they had an away goal.

Amoroso strikes
Jan Koller's shot proved too hot for Verlinden to handle and Marcio Amoroso followed up to pull one back for Dortmund. They were nearly level in the 59th minute through Addo, and it was not until a quarter-hour from the end that Brugge had a clear chance, Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller blocking a Mendoza effort.

Slender lead
Brugge pushed forward for a third goal in the final minutes and Bengt Sæternes had a chance in added time but a slender lead is all his side will take to Germany in a fortnight.
