Bayern pair keep the faith

Lucio believes FC Bayern München might need divine help to beat Chelsea FC but Claudio Pizarro is more confident.

By Fernando Duarte & Ben Lyttleton

FC Bayern München defender Lucio admits his team may need divine intervention at the Olympiastadion tonight if they are going to overturn Chelsea FC's 4-2 first-leg lead. The Bundesliga leaders need to beat José Mourinho's men by at least two goals to reach the last four of the UEFA Champions League - which is something no side has achieved against the Premiership pacesetters this season.

Divine intervention
Brazilian international Lucio - who deflected Joe Cole's fifth-minute shot into his own net at Stamford Bridge last week - is well aware of the tough task ahead. He told uefa.com: "We might have to rely on some help from God at the Olympiastadion. If we get that help we may just beat Chelsea and get a place in the semi-finals.

Two lapses
"It won't be easy but it is far from impossible," he added. "Bayern are a tough team to beat in Munich. I thought we played with determination in London and gave them a hard time. What made the difference was our lack of concentration at two key moments of the game - and Frank Lampard scored two goals from those lapses."

Harsh comments
Michael Ballack earned the German club a precious lifeline with a controversial last-minute penalty, when he went down under a Ricardo Carvalho challenge. That late twist prompted Chelsea captain John Terry to call Ballack a "serial diver" in his post-match interviews but Lucio insists Terry's comments were unfair. He said: "Some German players dive a lot, but in Michael's case, Terry's accusations were unfair. Ballack is a fighter and one of the most competitive men I know.

Deadly duo
"On the pitch, I was very impressed by Terry and Lampard in the first leg," the 26-year-old continued. "Everyone knows they have been the two best England players this season. It's too early to say if Chelsea are potential Champions League winners but they have shown enough quality to be considered one of the favourites. They are fantastic on the counterattack and play with great determination."

Pizarro promise
Bayern coach Felix Magath has been given a huge boost ahead of tonight's game with leading scorer Roy Makaay and Peruvian forward Claudio Pizarro both fit to return to the starting lineup. And Pizarro, who scored twice against Arsenal FC in the last round, is talking up his side's chances of an astonishing comeback.

Cech threat
"If Chelsea can score four, we can score more," he told uefa.com. "I hope their goalkeeper Petr Cech will not be that good on the night, or that lucky either. All the strikers at Bayern have had a good chat about Cech - me, Ballack, Roy Makaay and everybody including Zé Roberto. We have also done specific training on our attacking plan.

Useful information
"Chelsea are tremendously strong in attack, but we don't think that Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba and Eidur Gudjohnsen are better than us," Pizarro, 26, went on. "We have had lots of information about Chelsea for two or three months now, as we prepared to face various opponents. Everyone there is dangerous, but we are too. I'm not afraid of them."

Formidable force
Despite his bullish optimism, however, Pizarro concedes that Chelsea are now a formidable force in European football. "I enjoy watching them and they have achieved a very good balance among their stars. So we will go into the match respecting them - but they are not unbeatable," he said.
