The South African international, 28, sustained cartilage damage three days after United's players started training again at their Carrington headquarters. The injury means Fortune will miss their preparations for the 2005/06 campaign as well as the beginning of the English Premiership season on 13 August. He will also be absent for the first leg of United's UEFA Champions League third qualifying round tie on 9/10 August.
