Juventus FC coach Fabio Capello was grateful for the late strikes that saw off a SK Rapid Wien team already eyeing the UEFA Cup.
Article body
Adrian Mutu and Zlatan Ibrahimovic both struck in the last eight minutes to give Juventus FC a decisive, if slightly fortuitious, margin of victory against SK Rapid Wien at the Stadio Delle Alpi. David Trezeguet had given Juve the lead before the break, but Rapid's second-half revival made it hard work for the Serie A leaders. They are level on six points with next opponents FC Bayern München, who beat Club Brugge KV in the other Group A game. Rapid will meet the Belgian side on Matchday 3 looking for their first point.
Fabio Capello, Juventus coach
We deserved to win, but I am not happy about the fact that we had to wait until the 82nd minute to add the second goal. We didn't play well in the first half, we were slow and we played without the necessary motivation. Our goalkeeper, Christian Abbiati, made two good saves in the second half - this shows that Rapid played well, and that the match was quite well balanced. But we were much better after the break and we created several chances. I am really happy about the performances of the substitutes Alessandro Del Piero and Adrian Mutu - both were really good.
Josef Hickersberger, Rapid coach
We fought them for a long time, but in the end it was their international experience that counted. We created lots of pressure after we brought on Axel Lawaree with some good counterattacks. Andreas Ivanschitz and Steffen Hofmann both had good games and tried to make a match of it. Juventus deserved to win, though, as they were better than us in every aspect. After the game, the referee congratulated me on the behaviour of my team. I'm really happy because that is the first time something like that has happened in my career.
David Trezeguet, Juventus striker
It was a very important win. We struggled to make the breakthrough in the first half and then when we failed to score the second it became a lot harder. But victory is what counts, and we'll see how we get on against Bayern.
Gianluca Pessotto, Juventus defender
It means a lot to captain the side. I have been in the Juve team for years and now I have joined a very glamorous list.
Helge Payer, Rapid goalkeeper
We could all see that Juventus are a world-class team. We had chances to equalise after holding them at 1-0 for a long time, but we could not find a goal. Now we hope to win the match against Club Brugge so that we can get into the UEFA Cup.
Andreas Ivanschitz, Rapid midfield player
We played a perfect match except for the last ten minutes. Our tactics were good, but in the end our defence was not strong enough. Juventus took full advantage of our faults. We could have made more out of this match. We fought really bravely, but Juventus are the better team. Now we have to play Club Brugge and, hopefully, beat them.
