Last season's meetings
• On 19 October 2004, Juventus won 1-0 at the Stadio Delle Alpi with a goal from Pavel Nedvěd after 75 minutes. In the return on 3 November 2004, the Italian side went to Munich and again won 1-0, courtesy of a 90th-minute winner from Alessandro Del Piero. In fact, Juve only conceded one goal in that Group C campaign, on Matchday 6 against Maccabi Tel-Aviv FC with qualification long assured.
Good record against German sides
• Juventus will play host to a German club for the 19th time in UEFA competition. Of the previous 18 meetings, Juventus have won 13, two games have been drawn and German clubs have managed three victories.
Eight wins in first nine
• Up to 1990, Juventus had a stranglehold over their German visitors. The first nine of the 18 meetings had produced eight wins and a draw.
German fightback
• But between 1990 and 2000, German clubs achieved parity at the Stadio Delle Alpi with three wins, a draw and three defeats. Juventus's losses came at the hands of Hamburger SV twice BV Borussia Dortmund once – although on two of those occasions, Juve went on to lift the trophy.
• Hamburg gained their first success at the Delle Alpi in the 1989/90 UEFA Cup quarter-finals with a 2-1 win. However, they had lost 2-0 at home in the first leg and were eliminated by a Juventus team that went on to win the competition. Hamburg then won 3-1 in Turin in the 2000/01 UEFA Champions League first group stage, as Juventus were to finish bottom of their section.
• Dortmund gained their success against Juventus in the 1995/96 UEFA Champions League group stage with a 2-1 victory in Turin thanks to goals from Michael Zorc and Lars Ricken to a late Alessandro Del Piero reply. But again, Juventus were to overcome defeat by going on to win the competition. A season later Dortmund exacted revenge by defeating Juventus 3-1 in the final.
• Juventus were back on track in their last two home games against German visitors. In the 2001/02 UEFA Champions League second group stage, the Italian side beat Bayer 04 Leverskusen 4-0 with David Trezeguet scoring twice and Del Piero and Igor Tudor adding further goals. Yet the result marked a reversal of fortunes, as Juventus went on to finish bottom of the group, with Leverkusen emerging on top and going on to the final.
• Then Nedvěd's goal beat Bayern last season, as Juventus went on to win the group. Both clubs eventually lost to English opposition in the quarter-finals, Bayern falling 6-5 on aggregate to Chelsea FC and Juventus 2-1 to eventual winners Liverpool FC.
Eighth Italian test
• Bayern are making their eighth trip to face Italian opposition, winning two and losing five of their previous matches.
Two victories
• The two victories were recorded at AS Roma in the 1984/85 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup quarter-finals (a 2-1 success giving the Bavarian team a 4-1 aggregate win) and FC Internazionale Milano (3-1 in the third round of the 1988/89 UEFA Cup). Having lost 2-0 in Germany, Bayern turned the tie with that latter success to progress on away goals. However, they then lost 2-0 at SSC Napoli in the semi-finals, following a 2-2 draw at home.
Four straight defeats
• Since their victory at Inter, the German club are on a run of four straight defeats at the homes of Italian clubs, culminating with Nedvěd's winner last season for Juventus.
Final victory in Milan
However, they can at least look back with fondness to the 2001 UEFA Champions League final played in Milan when they drew 1-1 with Valencia CF, before winning 5-4 on penalties to claim a fourth European crown.
